What Is the Best Age to Move Into Independent Living In Chicago, Illinois?

In a city known for iconic architecture, world-class dining, and refined urban living, many older adults are rethinking what the next chapter should look like. When asking, “What is the best age to move into independent living?” the answer has far less to do with a number and far more to do with lifestyle readiness.

Luxury independent living offers the opportunity to enjoy Chicago living at its finest—without the burdens of homeownership or home maintenance. Much like choosing a luxury condo or an extended stay in a world-class hotel, it’s about convenience, sophistication, and access to experiences that elevate everyday life.

Many residents make this move not because they need care, but because they’ve realized their time is more valuable than managing property upkeep. They choose to move while they’re still traveling to Patagonia, attending opening nights at the Lyric Opera, and leading charitable boards—choosing The Clare for lifestyle enhancement rather than necessity.

For those who value independence, culture, and connection, making the move at the right time can enhance wellness, preserve autonomy, and enrich quality of life. The Clare, a premier senior living community in Chicago offering LifeCare, residents enjoy elegant residences, engaging social opportunities, and a lifestyle designed for comfort, wellness, and sophistication.

Understanding Luxury Independent Living In Chicago, IL

To understand the best age to move into independent living, it helps to first answer an important question: What is independent living? Independent living is designed for active older adults who want to maintain independence while simplifying daily responsibilities.

Luxury independent living goes a step further. It blends private residences with premium services and amenities—creating an experience similar to living in an upscale condominium or boutique hotel. Residents enjoy beautifully designed homes, fine dining, concierge-style services, and wellness programming, all within a vibrant, socially engaging community.

In Chicago, this elevated approach to independent living is exemplified by The Clare, where residents enjoy the freedom of independent living paired with the refinement and convenience expected from the city’s most prestigious residences.

When Is the Right Time to Move?

So, when can you move into luxury independent living? Many residents choose to make the transition in their late 60s, 70s, or early 80s—not because they need assistance, but because they want to fully enjoy the lifestyle while they are active and engaged.

Some signs it may be the right time include:

  • Home maintenance and property management feel more like burdens than worthwhile uses of your time
  • You’re looking for a richer social life and more opportunities to connect with intellectually curious peers
  • Cooking elaborate meals for one or two has lost its appeal, but you still appreciate exceptional cuisine
  • You want to plan proactively rather than wait for life to force a decision

Moving earlier allows residents to settle in comfortably, establish friendships, and take full advantage of everything luxury independent living offers—without urgency or compromise. The best age to move is when you can most fully participate in community life and build lasting relationships.

How Luxury Independent Living Supports Independence and Wellness

One of the defining benefits of luxury independent living is how it helps residents maintain independence while removing everyday stressors. Services such as housekeeping, maintenance, and flexible dining options allow residents to focus on living well instead of managing tasks. Wellness is thoughtfully integrated into daily life, with opportunities that support both physical and mental vitality, including:

  • Group fitness classes and wellness activities like yoga or pilates
  • Cultural programs, lectures, book clubs, and discussion groups
  • Social gatherings that foster genuine connection
  • Fitness and exercise programs designed for active adults
  • Wellness initiatives that promote balance, strength, and energy
  • Intellectual and creative pursuits that encourage lifelong learning

Regular exercise programs designed for active adults help increase longevity and enhance overall well-being, while intellectual and creative pursuits encourage lifelong learning and mental agility. Staying active and socially engaged creates an environment where wellness is not an obligation, but an enjoyable part of everyday life.

The Social Advantages of Moving at the Right Time

Loneliness can quietly affect health and happiness, especially for those living alone. Choosing luxury independent living at the right time opens the door to meaningful connections and a vibrant social life.

Residents have countless opportunities to make new friends through shared interests and sophisticated experiences, such as:

  • Mahjong groups that meet weekly for strategy and conversation
  • Docent-led tours to the Art Institute, MCA, and special exhibitions
  • Film screenings featuring classic cinema and contemporary documentaries
  • Resident art gallery exhibits showcasing the creative talents within the community
  • Refined happy hours in elegant surroundings with craft cocktails and live music
  • Cultural programming inspired by Chicago’s arts scene, from Symphony Center previews to author talks
  • Culinary events featuring seasonal tastings and chef demonstrations
  • Discussion groups exploring literature, current events, and ideas that matter

By moving while fully able to participate, residents can immerse themselves in community life, build lasting relationships, and enjoy a lifestyle that feels connected, engaging, and intellectually stimulating.
